Exploding Australia’s nuclear delusion | Business Spectator

Geoff Russell writes:

France has been producing most of its electricity using nuclear power stations for an average carbon dioxide intensity of about 80 grams of CO2 per kilowatt hour (gm-CO2/kWh) for two decades. In that time, Australia’s electricity has just gotten dirtier, rising from 817 in 1990 to 841 gm-CO2/kWh in 2010.

….Switzerland and Sweden have been using a mix of hydro and nuclear to achieve even lower carbon dioxide intensity than France.

  1. Sorry Colin but if you think that article actually explodes any myths maybe you don’t understand the nature of Nuclear energy. Comparing a nuclear reactor to a kettle that takes a ‘long time to cool off’ when you turn the power off!?! It’s not a kettle I would like to drink out of.

    1. What it does is compare the environmental damage caused by coal-fired power stations against that of nuclear energy. A cost-benefit analysis is more likely to opt for nuclear.

      1. What do you think is going on in JAPAN right now as we speak…how’s that air going?
        How’s that food tasting?
        How’s that soil doing?
And, I nearly forgot, how’s the oceans going and have you heard anymore about the air in parts of america that have just been tested for radiation where the streets that people walk along are dangerously high with radiation, and NO level of radiation is safe either.
ALL the real info from Fukushima is being kept from the public and you must be joking if you think the australian governemnt is going to do anything different.
“cost-benefit”…..there we have it, everything is all about money….and any nuclear crap ripped out of the ground will be all about “cost-cutting” at every chance they get regardless of safety, yeah we gotta rip out those profits as quickly as we can and STUFF the future.
Unbelievable self-centred and mindless thinking that revolves around bloody MONEY and control is making people and the planet SICK and nuclear in the hands of these same voracious people will make matters WORSE,NOT BETTER!

      2. Remember, this is a debate — not an argument. These are important issues and deserve our open-minded consideration of all points of view. We welcome opposing view-points and constructive debate, but emotional outbursts, failure to show due respect to other posters, and conspiracy clap-trap will be consigned to the trash can.

  2. Bill, I guess it’s not Collin who’s got it wrong , it’s you. This is why I say that : would you ban driving because of a few car accidents? Sure you wouldn’t. Nobody does. But wait, we just did that. We don’t want nuclear energy because we feel sorry for the planet so , we will continue to put out billions of tons of CO 2 every year , tax the people for it, make it a political issue and allow an occasional tear drop for the sake of the planet. Nuclear energy – bad , gas and coal burning – good. Not for the planet and not for me. Good for governments pocket and shareholders. Who doesn’t love money? I mean the planet. We all want more of it. Not money, but fresh air and a cleaner planet. So , let’s put some more of that CO 2 out there and be proud of it.
