ROSS GITTINS: We need a more balanced approach to progress

Ross Gittins:

A lot of the problems the nation struggles with and argues over boil down to the considerable potential for conflict between what economists summarise as “equity” and “efficiency”. We act as though one is right and the other wrong but, in truth, sensible people want a mix of both. So, though we don’t always realise it, the hard part is finding the best trade-off between the two……..

There many fine words here that articulate the problems , but at no point do you put your finger on the reasons that we are all chasing a shrinking benefit from our increasing effort. As the gap between lenders and borrowers grows ever larger in terms of power and assets , not even a wealthy government like Australia can bridge the gap. The present debt based currency system is flawed and needs replacing with a system that is closer to that prescribed in the Duran.
Please note I am not a practicing Muslim.

  2. “the reason we are chasing a shrinking benefit form our increasing effort” is due to the ability of foreigners entering this country-either legally/illegally and not working, just receiving benefits.these benefit receivers are having umpteen children and receive too much benefit without even thinking about contributing to the australian way of life, which is eroding very fast.have you ever seen the ratio of muslim to anglo in prison?
please note i am definately NOT a practicing muslim— because i work and pay taxes

I am not Ross , my name is Chris , and I wrote the comment you replied to. Perhaps you would care to quote some government statistics to back your view of Australian society. As Australia becomes more multicultural it would be wise to get to know some of the new immigrant’s before you generalize. Remember unless you are of aboriginal decent then you too are a descendant of an immigrant.

      1. chris.imo multiculturalism DOES NOT WORK.People come to this country, not to embrace our way of life but to change it to their ways through their religion, laws, standards and views.
i see through my work, how Australia has evolved and the increase in immigration is imo one of the reasons why my generation and ones before and the ones in the future are suffering. From deteriorating funds to health, education etc. There is too much benefits given to the people who wish not to give any return, will not work or pay taxes.
the idea of not having a non debt based currency system is a dream. The major players in this world would not allow it to happen as they do not want a level playing field, and who owns most of the gold and silver in the world anyway?
Maybe, we should have plastic bags as currency.Everyone has plenty of them,so everyone will be wealthy.we could still have a mining industry mining rubbish dumps for them-employment and it will clean up the enviroment as well-greens are happy.
Just my take on life, and please note i am definately NOT a practising muslim
