Australia's cultural revolution

Benjamin Herscovitch writes:

“Any genuine liberal democracy will be multicultural: a commitment to liberal rights and freedoms is counterfeit unless it comes with a commitment to cultural diversity. Beyond a corruption of liberalism, the idea of a monolinguistic and monocultural Australia is only plausible if we deny who we are. Australia is Chinese, Indian and Vietnamese just as it is Irish, English and Italian. Multiculturalism is not a collective aspiration; it is not a policy that can be terminated. It is unapologetically an Australian reality.”

Be careful not to throw the baby out with the bath water. Australia’s strength lies in its core values, many of which stem from its Anglo-Celtic past. One of those strengths is an open society that has successfully integrated successive waves of immigrants into mainstream Australian culture. Our culture has been enriched by the experience.

A unified society requires a cohesive set of values to which everyone subscribes — no matter their ethnic background, language or religion. We should celebrate our ethnic and cultural diversity but not use multiculturalism as an excuse for failing to properly assimilate some minorities. We need to be tolerant of diversity but intolerant of anything that conflicts with our core values of fairness and tolerance. To act otherwise would be simply un-Australian.

  1. And how do you get immigrants to leave their baggage behind, they bring it all with them and make a ghetto for themselves where ever they go.
They can be here 50 years and still not speak the lingo,so much for multi -culturism,
and obey the laws mmmm forget it.
    Sad but true.

  2. It is only people who work/have worked and able to contribute to society that are Australians. Those that arrive by boat to receive free housing, food, medical, insurance, furniture, spending money and cars will never fit into our multicultural history for they are the first wave of a new and disturbing repetition of contemporary English history……. The illegal migrants who will never work and neither will their grandchildren.

  3. We can’t assimilate those that don’t work, have no wish to work and live on handouts. This is no different than trying to assimilate unmarried mothers with 3 kids by 3 different fathers. And no different to a father who has 3 kids by 3 mothers. Stop the handouts = start assimilating.

  4. Lets see if you believe this? – I was doing volunteer work with families which Australia classed as refugees – not the boat people, but basically the same. One family, a man, two wives and nine children were given a fully furnished house, had two cars, no-one in that house worked…they were earning $52K p.a. thanks to our govt. The man said to me, if he worked, he would earn less than that. True you know…….so why should he work??? Give me an answer to that. I work, but earn less than this mans $52K… why am I working???? Because I’m an Australian…and thats what Australians do.

    1. In other words we are encouraging people not to get a job and assimilate — but rather to live on welfare. That is not a “vibrant multicultural society”.
