Poroshenko: ‘Today Ukraine is bleeding for its independence and territorial integrity’

From Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko’s speech to the Canadian parliament in Ottawa on September 17:

Today Ukraine pays a very high price for defending what we believe in – democracy and freedom to choose our own future. For more than two decades we proudly stated that Ukraine gained its independence without shedding a single drop of blood.

Today Ukraine is bleeding for its independence and territorial integrity.

Canadian housing bubble looks ripe for popping | Toronto Star

Adam Peterson writes the Canadian housing bubble is headed for a “slow-motion” crash:

My gravest concern is that Canada is fast approaching a 5:1 home-price-to-income ratio, a benchmark achieved by the U.S. at the peak in 2006. Since the correction, the U.S. ratio now hovers at approximately 3:1.

To compound the problem, household debt in Canada has breached 150 per cent of income and continues in the wrong direction; households are not cushioned against a blow.

Australian household debt is also hovering around 150% of disposable income.

Canada’s Household Debt Is Rising – WSJ.com

OTTAWA—Increased household debt in Canada, underpinned by rising house prices and low interest rates, poses a key domestic risk to financial stability, the Bank of Canada said on Thursday.

The finding, contained in the central bank’s quarterly economic review, was the latest in a series of warnings from economists and Canadian officials that high consumer borrowing has emerged as one of the economy’s biggest risks. Household debt stood at over 150% of personal disposable income as of the third quarter of last year, the report noted.

Canada TSX 60

The TSX 60 index is headed for a test of the descending trendline and resistance at 720 on the weekly chart. Upward breakout would signal a primary advance to 790* and the end of the bear market. Respect of zero by 13-week Twiggs Money Flow would strengthen the signal, indicating strong buying pressure.

Loonie rallies

Canada’s Loonie also responded to rising commodity prices with a rally to test resistance at $1.01. Breakout remains unlikely, but would offer a long-term target of $1.07. The probability would increase if 63-day Twiggs Momentum recovers above zero.

Oil touches new 2011 low – Business – CBC News

The price of oil, Canada’s biggest commodity export, reached a new 2011 low Tuesday.

November oil slipped as much as $74.95 US a barrel, its lowest since September of 2010. It recovered somewhat, but still closed down $1.94 at $75.67 on the New York Mercantile Exchange, its third straight day of losses.

Crude rose to three-year highs this year, but the reasons often cited for that increase — fears of growing Middle East tensions, rising Chinese demand, bullish views from investment banks and expectations of an aggressive U.S. stimulus plan — have diminished.

Other market watchers have suggested the price gained solely because of rampant speculation on the commodities markets.

TSX60

TSX 60 Index is testing resistance at 725/735. 13-Week Twiggs Money Flow oscillating around zero indicates hesitancy. Resistance is likely to hold and reversal below the week’s low at 700 would warn of another test of support at 650/660. In the medium term, failure of support would offer a target of 580*.

Loonie band

The Candian Loonie is consolidating in a narrow band above parity, warning of selling pressure. Earlier penetration of the long-term rising trendline indicates the up-trend has weakened. Breach of support would confirm a primary down-trend, with an initial target of $0.94 against the greenback.
