The danger of antibiotic-resistant bacteria should be placed alongside pandemic influenza and terrorism on the UK government’s list of threats to national security, the country’s most senior medic has advised. Sally Davies, the UK chief medical officer, warned that antimicrobial resistance “poses a catastrophic threat” and that international action to combat this problem is needed now. Davies, speaking as she launched a report on the problem compiled by some of the country’s leading doctors and academics, called for more research into new antibiotics and better surveillance of the these bugs, incorporating more genomic testing to increase scientists’ understanding of emerging resistance.

In my opinion this is just another example of fear mongering by people looking for ever fater government funding grants.
If we stopped sending our soldiars to other peoples civil wars and stopped feeding anti bioticse to healthy animals , we would not have any terror threats to worry about.
Chief Medical Officer in the UK would not normally be considered a fearmongerer.
I accept that Ms Davis is well trained and knowledgable in the efectivness of the presant availble drugs. The problem with using new antibiotics is eventualy they mutate and become ineffective because of our intensive farming practiceses. However the main issue I have is why we have to be constantly bombarded with words like “catastrophic threat” when apart from the odd minor death toll ,little happens to justify the use in the media of such extream language .
If you did a “bug” count in any ward of any hospital (public or private) you would be more than alarmed at how dirty they are. Ever since they moved nurse training to universities and employed “cleaners” who have more demarcation issues that the Korean DMZ, the cleanliness has gone down hill. Have a look next time you visit but avoid going in if you can. “Hospitals? That’s where people die”.
Don’t blame the cleaners. Bugs are becoming resistant to many cleaning products. The power of evolution.
