{"id":7715,"date":"2013-05-06T04:21:48","date_gmt":"2013-05-06T08:21:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/goldstocksforex.com\/?p=7715"},"modified":"2013-05-06T04:21:48","modified_gmt":"2013-05-06T08:21:48","slug":"are-australian-banks-really-sound","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thepatientinvestor.com\/index.php\/2013\/05\/06\/are-australian-banks-really-sound\/","title":{"rendered":"Are Australian banks really sound?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href='http:\/\/www.businessspectator.com.au\/news\/2013\/5\/6\/financial-services\/apra-unveils-conservative-basel-plans'>Business Spectator<\/a> reports:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>In a statement APRA chairman John Laker said that, in implementing the Basel III liquidity reforms, the authority&#8217;s objectives were to improve its ability to assess and monitor ADIs\u2019 liquidity risk and strengthen the resilience of the Australian banking system. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;APRA believes ADIs are well-placed to meet the new liquidity requirements on the original timetable and doing so will send a strong message about the soundness of the Australian banking system,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>If you repeat misinformation often enough, people will believe it is true. Australian banks face two risks: liquidity risk and solvency risk. Addressing liquidity risk does not address solvency risk. Australian banks report risk-weighted capital ratios which are misleading if not downright dangerous. Risk-weighting encourages banks to concentrate exposure in areas historically perceived as low risk, such as residential mortgages. When all banks are over-weight the same asset, the risk profile changes &#8212; as Eurozone banks discovered with government bonds. <\/p>\n<p>If we remove risk-weighting, as proposed in the US <a href=\"http:\/\/goldstocksforex.com\/2013\/04\/28\/capital-regulation-after-the-crisis-business-as-usual-martin-hellwig\/\" title=\"Capital Regulation after the Crisis: Business as Usual? | Martin Hellwig\" target=\"_blank\">Brown-Vitter bill<\/a>, the four majors in Australia would have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.afr.com\/p\/blogs\/christopher_joye\/rba_quietly_increases_banks_bailout_ksLcB6WlebkzfQ89p3pPAK\" title=\"RBA quietly increases banks\u2019 bailout buffer\" target=\"_blank\">capital ratios of 3 to 4 percent<\/a>.
