Signing of phase one of the US-China trade deal lifted iron ore, which is\u00a0 testing resistance at 95. Consolidation at\/below 95 is likely, however, given that the mid-2019 peak was caused by supply disruption in Brazil.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.incrediblecharts.com\/images\/2018\/2020-01-17-tr.png?w=525&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Iron Ore\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The ASX 300 Metals &amp; Mining index is headed for a test of resistance at 4800.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.incrediblecharts.com\/images\/2018\/2020-01-17-xmm.png?w=525&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"ASX 300 Metals &amp; Mining\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Financials are weak, but the ASX 300 Banks index found support at 7250. Respect of the descending trendline would warn of another decline, with a short-term target of 7000. Penetration of the trendline is less likely but would warn that a bottom is forming.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.incrediblecharts.com\/images\/2018\/2020-01-17-xbak.png?w=525&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"ASX 300 Banks\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The ASX 200 REITs index is testing resistance at 1680, reflecting the investor demand for yield.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.incrediblecharts.com\/images\/2018\/2020-01-17-xpj.png?w=525&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"ASX 200 REITs\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A weakening Australian Dollar may lift exports slightly but reflects concerns over the <a href=\"https:\/\/thepatientinvestor.com\/index.php\/2020\/01\/18\/trump-gets-his-deal\/\">phase one US-China trade deal<\/a> and the impact substantive purchase commitments made by China will have on other energy and commodity suppliers. Breach of 68.50 would offer a short-term target of 67 US cents.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.incrediblecharts.com\/images\/2018\/2020-01-17-aud.png?w=525&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"AUDUSD\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We continue to hold a bearish view on the domestic economy but recognize that the tailwind from resources may partly alleviate this. <a href=\"https:\/\/thepatientinvestor.com\/index.php\/2020\/01\/15\/asx-leading-sectors\/\">IT and Healthcare sectors<\/a> are, in our view, over-priced and we maintain our focus on defensive and contra-cyclical (gold) stocks.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The ASX 200 is advancing towards its medium-term target of 7200 after breaking resistance at 6800.
