While that is a record time, it does not negate its reliability in predicting a recession within 12 months after the inversion ends.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.incrediblecharts.com\/images\/2024\/2024-09-23-10y-3m.png?resize=525%2C363&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"10-Year Treasury Yield - 3-Month T-bill Discount Rate\" width=\"525\" height=\"363\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Yield curve\/S&amp;P 500<\/h3>\n<p>The second yield curve indicator will only be triggered when the above yield-curve inversion ends.<\/p>\n<h3>Fed Funds Rate\/Financial Conditions\/Coincident\/S&amp;P 500<\/h3>\n<p>We modified our Fed Funds Rate\/ISM Business Activity indicator to reduce whipsaws, replacing it with a composite indicator comprising:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the Fed Funds Rate;<\/li>\n<li>the Chicago Fed National Financial Conditions Index;<\/li>\n<li>the Coincident Economic Activity Index from the Philadelphia Fed;\u00a0and<\/li>\n<li>the S&amp;P 500 with 30-week Twiggs Smoothed Momentum.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Three out of four components are required to confirm a bear market.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, the Fed announced a 50 basis point rate cut, our first bear signal.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.incrediblecharts.com\/images\/2024\/2024-09-24-ffr.png?resize=525%2C363&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Fed Funds Target Rate (Average of High &amp; Low)\" width=\"525\" height=\"363\" \/><\/p>\n<p>However, the Chicago Fed National Financial Conditions Index declined to a low \u20130.58 for the week ending September 20. Values above -0.4 warn of monetary tightening, while below -0.4 indicate easy monetary conditions.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.incrediblecharts.com\/images\/2024\/2024-09-25-fci.png?resize=525%2C363&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Chicago Fed National Financial Conditions Index\" width=\"525\" height=\"363\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Coincident Economic Activity Index crossed below 2.5% annual growth for the 12 months to July (2.38%), warning that the economy is slowing. However, on September 25, the July figure was revised to 2.58%, with August rising to 2.72%.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.incrediblecharts.com\/images\/2024\/2024-09-25-coincident.png?resize=525%2C363&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Coincident Economic Activity Index from the Philadelphia Fed\" width=\"525\" height=\"363\" \/><\/p>\n<p>30-Week Twiggs Smoothed Momentum also signals a healthy up-trend on the S&amp;P 500 at 12.8%.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.incrediblecharts.com\/images\/2024\/2024-09-23-spx-tms.png?resize=525%2C404&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"S&amp;P 500 with 30-week Twiggs Smoothed Momentum\" width=\"525\" height=\"404\" \/><\/p>\n<p>With only one bearish out of four, the composite indicator signals a bull market.<\/p>\n<h3>Cyclical Employment<\/h3>\n<p>Cyclical industries\u2014manufacturing, construction, transport, and warehousing\u2014account for most of the jobs lost during a typical recession. Cyclical employment grew by 17,900 in August, showing no sign of a recession on the horizon.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.incrediblecharts.com\/images\/2024\/2024-09-23-cyclical-jobs.png?resize=525%2C363&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Cyclical Employment\" width=\"525\" height=\"363\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Heavy Truck Sales<\/h3>\n<p>Heavy truck sales are another reliable leading indicator of recessions. Seasonally adjusted sales of more than 42,000 units in August continue to signal a robust economy.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.incrediblecharts.com\/images\/2024\/2024-09-23-heavytrucks.png?resize=525%2C363&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Heavy Truck Sales\" width=\"525\" height=\"363\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Conclusion<\/h2>\n<p>Four out of five risk indicators continue to signal a bull market.<\/p>\n<p>Our strategy is to divide our investment portfolio into five equal-sized buckets of 20% each.
