Sen. John McCain on Russia’s airstrikes in Syria

Shades of Churchill in 1938:

Winston Churchill, denouncing the Munich Agreement in the House of Commons, declared:

“We have suffered a total and unmitigated defeat … you will find that in a period of time which may be measured by years, but may be measured by months, Czechoslovakia will be engulfed in the Nazi régime. We are in the presence of a disaster of the first magnitude … we have sustained a defeat without a war, the consequences of which will travel far with us along our road … we have passed an awful milestone in our history, when the whole equilibrium of Europe has been deranged, and that the terrible words have for the time being been pronounced against the Western democracies: “Thou art weighed in the balance and found wanting”. And do not suppose that this is the end. This is only the beginning of the reckoning. This is only the first sip, the first foretaste of a bitter cup which will be proffered to us year by year unless by a supreme recovery of moral health and martial vigour, we arise again and take our stand for freedom as in the olden time.”

On 3 October 1938, Churchill added:

“England has been offered a choice between war and shame. She has chosen shame, and will get war.”

  1. Well I hope the analogy is weak, especially as the USA and Tony are part responsible for the present threat in the Middle East due to the seeds sown by the Iraq invasion just as the Powers were part responsible for the events in the later 1930s from the botched settlement after WW1 that sowed pretty fertile seeds of future destruction.

One thing to note ( crossed fingers) compared to 1938 is that clarity of vision and threat was good then. It was black and white with only one white camp and one black one .

By contrast, the situation is the Middle East etc is a maelstrom of complexity with perhaps no pure white ‘player’ state/organisation and so many shades of grey on a spectrum to the black flag of ISIS.

One might argue whether a Russia throwing its weight around in the area causes more problems that the USA who started the whole damn thing in a sense from putting US bases in Saudi .

And, re Russia, you have to bear in mind that ISIS is a great deal closer to Russia and its Moslem minority areas than the USA with its absence of Moslem minorities; at least indigenous ones. In other words, Russia has a back yard to defend from ISIS; thoughthe threat is not as real as Cuba fr the USA 5 years ago .

  2. McCain is a warmonger, pure and simple..he will not be happy until he has WW111…Putin will not be bullied by the US…Putin will not give up the military strategic Ukraine without a fight… McCain indeed appears unable to accept that the US Empirical might is on the wane, not to mention their bankrupt…maybe,if the US stuck to it’s own affairs it could start to balance it’s chequebook.

  3. Emotive speeches full of unsubstantiated innuendo my appeal to some people in America but they do not ring true with those people who are aware of the disastrous role US foreign policy has played in the middle east. Starting with the US sponsored UN sanctions against Iraq which according to UNESCO, were responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of deaths of children, to the illegal invasion of Iraq after 9/11 and the complete failure that has been, it is no wonder that the US is seen in many parts of the world as the villian. McCain is kidding himself if he believes ISIL in Syria is a result of the policies of the Assad regime. ISIL arose as an off shoot from al Qaeda in Iraq and spread to Syria. Its growth like so many other Islamic militias in places like Iraq, Syria and Libya have been largely as a result of the power vacuums created by the policies of the neocons George Bush in the US and Tony Blair in the UK, policies John McCain has directly supported. As a military man he should be aware the wars on not only won in the air. It requires troops on the ground, and the failure the US to coordinate its bombing campaign with Assad’s ground troops was destined to failure. The Russian willingness to act in conjunction with the Assad regime, like it or not, is the most practical way of fighting ISIL.

  4. Russia will eventually turn its attention to Israel….what we are seeing is the fulfillment of old testament prophesies regarding the eventual return of the Lord Jesus Christ, …..read Ezekiel chapter 38
